Workshop in Uppsala on Nordic security
On 5-6 December, Alva Myrdal Centre for Nuclears Disarmament and Pugwash Council arranged a workshop in Uppsala titled ‘Nordic security: Deterrence and risk reduction’. This was the first workshop in a series at the centre, which aims to stimulate co-operation between Nordic ministries of foreign affairs on disarmament and nuclear arms control issues. These workshops are presented in collaboration with the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. The aim is to assess common interests, redefine security priorities, and identify workable approaches to reduce nuclear dangers between NATO and Russia. The project will map the impact of NATO membership on the security policies of Nordic states, focusing on issues such as the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), military readiness for Article 5 commitments, and security assurances. Among the participants at the first workshop were Pugwash Council President Götz Neuneck and representatives from the Nordic Pugwash groups.
A report is expected to be published in the beginning of 2026 at https://www.uu.se/en/centre/alva-myrdal
